One of the top young head coaches in the sport is being rewarded.
Temple announced via a press release Thursday afternoon that it has reached an agreement on a four-year contract extension with Matt Rhule. The head coach is now signed through the 2021 season.
“Matt Rhule is one of the best young coaches in college football and we are excited that he will be at the helm of Temple Football through at least 2021,” said athletic director Dr. Patrick Kraft in a statement. “Matt has the program heading in the right direction, especially as we enter a very promising season on the gridiron, and we are confident that he is the right person to take the program to even greater heights.”
There was no official word on if a raise was included in the extension.
The 40-year-old Rhule will be entering his third season as the Owls’ head coach. In his first two years, Rhule has compiled an 8-16 record.
The Owls’ 6-6 mark on 2014 was the best for a second-year Temple head coach since Jerry Berndt went 7-4 in 1990. Al Golden and Steve Addazio, who both left the program for Power Five jobs, went 4-8 and 4-7, respectively, in their second year as head Owl.
“I am thrilled to sign this extension and to know that I will continue to lead the program into the future,” said Rhule. “I’m proud of our student athletes and all that they do and I look forward to continuing to lead and teach them for years to come. Temple has been my family’s home since 2006 and I am honored to be able to serve the university as its football coach.”
