While it remains to be seen if Penn State’s NCAA sanctions will be overturned, the three former university admins at the heart of the Jerry Sandusky scandal will likely know their fate within the next year.
District Judge William Wenner said Tuesday that former PSU president Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz will face trial on charges that include obstruction of justice, child endangerment and conspiracy.
"(This is) a tragic day for Penn State University, to say the least,” Wenner said.
Prosecutors say the three knew about allegations made against Sandusky in 1998 and in 2001, but failed to take appropriate action and later misled a grand jury about what they knew. All three have maintained their innocence. Exactly when the three former admins will face trial isn’t official, but it’s been speculated that it could start sometime in spring of next year.
Sandusky, the longtime assistant at PSU, is serving what basically amounts to a life sentence after being convicted last year of 45 counts of child sexual abuse.
