Two Tar Heels have offseason surgery, one expected to miss spring practice

Freshman linebacker Shakeel Rashad had just enrolled at North Carolina earlier this month, but unfortunately for him, he may not be able to get on the field to practice with his team in the immediate future.

Inside Carolina reports that Rashad had surgery Thursday morning to repair the meniscus in his right knee and is expected to miss spring practice.

Rashad is a three-star linebacker (according to Rivals.com) from Jacksonville, Florida, and was the first commit to UNC for the 2012 class.

Additionally, offensive lineman Jonathan Cooper (pictured, No. 64) had shoulder surgery on Wednesday to alleviate chronic inflammation, but his status for spring practice is a bit more TBD. A junior, Cooper decided to come back for his senior season instead of declare for the NFL draft even though he submitted his paperwork for an evaluation.

Cooper led the Tar Heels with 47 knockdown blocks last season.
