Coming off Mark Richt‘s first SEC East title since 2007, athletic director Greg McGarity confirmed back in December that he had commenced talks on a new contract with his head football coach.
Three months later, the new contract has been confirmed.
In a press release, UGA announced that Richt has agreed to a three-year contract extension. The new deal means Richt, who will be entering his 12th season at the school this year, is signed through the 2016 season.
The release states that Richt’s current compensation is valued at $2.81 million annually, and that financial details of the new contract are in the process of being finalized.
“The extension is a statement that we are excited to have Mark as our coach and that he is excited about being at Georgia in the years to come,” said McGarity in a statement.
In his 11 seasons at the school, Richt has compiled a 106-37 record and won two SEC championships. Following back-to-back seasons of 8-5 in 2009 and 6-7 in 2010, however, there was increased chatter that Richt’s backside was seated squarely on the hot seat.
A 10-win season in 2011, though, squashed such talk and led to Richt’s latest contract enhancement.
“I’ve said for many years that I wanted to be at Georgia as long as Georgia wanted me,” said Richt. “I’m excited about where we are with our
program and looking forward to the years ahead.”
In addition to Richt’s extension, the school also announced a two-year contract extension for defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. Grantham, who’s entering his third season with the program, is now signed through the 2014 season.
“Todd has done an outstanding job with our defense and I know our staff and players look forward to his continuing leadership on that side of the ball,” Richt said.
