Two days after quarterbacking North Carolina in an Independence Bowl loss to Missouri, Bryn Renner has undergone surgery to repair an issue the QB has dealt with all season long.
In a release, the Tar Heels announced that Renner had successful surgery Wednesday on his left ankle to remove an anterior bone spur and a posterior accessory bone.
Per the release, Renner’s ankle condition became an issue in mid-July, approximately three weeks before the start of UNC’s training camp. After consulting with the UNC sports medicine staff, Renner and his family made the decision to play with a hinged ankle brace and postpone surgery until after the season.
Renner finished his sophomore season as the top-rated QB in the ACC in passing efficiency and the No. 9 QB in the country in that category. It’s unclear whether Renner will be available for spring practice.
Two players who definitely won’t be available for the spring sessions are sophomore linebacker Darius Lipford and junior defensive end Donte Paige-Moss, who tore the ACLs in their left and right knees, respectively, during the bowl loss. Lipford started five games this season, while Paige-Moss played in all 13 games and recorded four tackles for loss and two sacks.
