WVU’s Geno Smith a go for spring practice

West Virginia’s spring practice officially kicks off -- so to speak -- tomorrow, and undoubtedly one of the major questions concerning the Mountaineers was the health of quarterback Geno Smith.

Smith had surgery in January to repair a stress fracture in his left foot -- one that he played with all of last season -- leaving doubt that the quarterback might not be ready to go at all when WVU took the field for the first time in April.

However, I spoke with WVU Football Athletic Trainer Dave Kerns earlier today, who said that Smith would be able to fully participate in spring practice, with the only exception being prolonged running drills.

“He’ll be able to take all the snaps, drop back, throw, hand off, everything,” Kerns said. “He’s cleared to go.”

Quarterback depth continues to be an area of concern for West Virginia. Only two freshman, Brian Athey and Paul Millard, sit behind Smith. Coley White, who took all the snaps in last year’s spring drills while Smith recovered from a similar foot injury, has moved to inside receiver.
