Cy Sneed has signed with the Yakult Swallows of Japan’s Central League, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
Sneed spent parts of the last two seasons with the Astros but has found a better opportunity overseas. Houston now has an additional 40-man roster spot to play with.

Multiple reports state that free agent right-handed pitcher Cy Sneed is being pursued by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.
This is the same club that signed former Pittsburgh Pirate Jose Osuna recently. Sneed, 28, appeared in 18 games with the Astros in 2020, and he registered a 5.71 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 21/10 K/BB ratio. He’s been an up-and-down arm over the last couple of seasons, and a successful stint in Japan could help improve his stock going forward.

  • SF Starting Pitcher #35
Astros manager Dusty Baker clarified Sunday that Justin Verlander has a right forearm strain and will be shut down for “a couple of weeks.”
That’s a little different than the initial report from Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle, which stated that Verlander would be shut down for the remainder of the season with a right elbow injury. Still, it could be difficult for the veteran right-hander to make it back given the condensed schedule. He’ll be reevaluated around the middle of August and seems certain to miss at least a month of action. Cristian Javier, Cy Sneed, and Bryan Abreu are among the options to fill the sudden rotation vacancy in Houston.

He’s back. Sneed has now gone back and forth between the majors and minors six times over the last two months. This time he’s up to replace Brad Peacock on the 25-man roster, who was placed on the injured list with renewed shoulder issues. There’s a chance he stick around longer this time, as rosters will expand in September.
