Bass

A seventh-round pick, Bass was thought to be in good position to earn a roster spot. As it is, he’s likely ticketed for the practice squad. Coming out of small-school Missouri Western State, Bass is facing a daunting transition.

Bass was outplayed by UDFA Ryan Richardson during Oakland’s preseason, but he was a dominant small-schooler who looked like a strong developmental prospect during pre-draft all-star games. He’ll be a deep reserve in Chicago.

Bass has a ton of experience -- 50 starts at Missouri Western -- so his biggest challenge will be getting acclimated to the NFL competition level. On such a weak Raiders roster, he’ll have a chance to stick.

Bass (6-foot-3 7/8, 262) started a record 50 games for the Griffons and left MWSU as the school’s all-time leader in both sacks (40.5) and tackles for loss (56). A squatty, long-armed (33 1/2") pass rusher, Bass was an East-West Shrine standout before running a 4.84 at the Combine with a 1.67 ten-yard split. Bass faces a large jump in competition and lacks truly explosive edge-rusher tools, but he’s good value here for a Raiders team in desperate need of sack production. He’ll have a solid chance to make the 53.

Bass announced the news himself on Twitter. Solid on special teams, Bass is a good depth signing who has a decent shot to crack the final roster.

The Titans are desperately thin at outside linebacker behind Derrick Morgan and Brian Orakpo. Bass could see some rotational snaps.

Bass recorded 3.5 sacks in 13 games with the Jets last year. He should compete for a rotational role in camp. The Jets waived LB Micah Awe, OT Korren Kirven, P Ben Turk, WR Jalin Marshall, WR JoJo Natson, and WR Damore’ea Stringfellow in corresponding moves.

Bass re-signed for the veteran minimum after appearing in 13 games (two starts) last year. The Jets have major concerns at the outside linebacker spots, with Bass and Lorenzo Mauldin competing to start opposite Jordan Jenkins. It’s possible they add a pass rusher before training camp.

He’ll take the roster spot of LE Lamarr Houston (knee), who’s been formally placed on I.R. This will be Bass’ second stay on the 53-man roster this season.
