ESPN 49ers reporter Michael Wagaman left sophomore WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) off his 53-man roster projection.
There is no mention of Smelter in the write-up, so it is unclear if he was left off for injury or performance reasons. Coming off a 2014 ACL tear which caused him to redshirt last year, Smelter was declared healthy in April, but he was reportedly limited throughout the offseason program. He will need to prove healthy if he plans to climb a nondescript depth chart.

    49ers waived/injured WR DeAndre Smelter.
He’ll revert to I.R. when he clears waivers. A 2015 fourth-round pick, Smelter has yet to appear in an NFL game.

CSN Bay Area believes second-year 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter is “clearly (behind)” Eric Rogers on the depth chart.
Rogers is a 2013 undrafted free agent who spent the past two years playing in Canada. A former baseball player who was a “medical redshirt” as a rookie, Smelter is evidently still quite raw after playing in Georgia Tech’s triple option in college. Smelter Dynasty league owners could have an answer on his future by the end of training camp. Reporter Matt Maiocco does expect Smelter to crack the 53-man roster.

49ers GM Trent Baalke expects WR DeAndre Smelter to play this preseason.
Smelter has been sidelined for most of training camp with a soft-tissue injury. He’ll likely miss the next two weeks, but isn’t yet a candidate for I.R. Smelter will compete with Quinton Patton for the starting split-end job once he gets cleared.

DeAndre Smelter (knee) has been practicing without restrictions.
Smelter is fully recovered from his 2014 torn ACL. He’s in a wide-open competition behind Torrey Smith after redshirting. Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington will likely open training camp ahead of Smelter, with rookie Aaron Burbridge, DeAndrew White, Jerome Simpson and CFLer Eric Rogers all battling for spots.
  • FA Wide Receiver
49ers sophomore WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) said he “feels great.”
A fourth-round pick last year, Smelter spent his rookie season on the sidelines rehabbing a torn ACL. A “nagging” injury kept him from participating in full for the entire offseason program, but it sounds like he plans to be ready for training camp. Smelter needs a strong showing to earn a roster spot, let alone a role.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat says second-year WR DeAndre Smelter “seems to be Quinton Patton’s primary competition for the starting split-end job.”
After a slow spring and a hamstring tweak early in training camp, Smelter appears to be coming on a bit. He shined at Monday’s session, beating Jimmie Ward and Kenneth Acker on quick slants before catching a tunnel screen from Colin Kaepernick. If Smelter can stay healthy, he has as much upside as any receiver on the 49ers’ roster. Patton is not exactly stiff competition.

The 49ers are “taking it easy” on second-year WR DeAndre Smelter (ACL) at OTAs.
Smelter was reported to be practicing fully in mid-May, but he hasn’t been working in the 49ers’ current sessions. When he has been on the field, Smelter has run with the third- and fourth-team groups behind Torrey Smith. Smelter tore his ACL his final year at Georgia Tech and was redshirted as an NFL rookie. He may face an uphill battle for playing time as a sophomore.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat predicts second-year WR DeAndre Smelter will spend all of 2016 on injured reserve.
In and out of practice since OTA season, Smelter is “the invisible man” at 49ers workouts, according to beat writer Grant Cohn. Smelter tore his ACL in his final season at Georgia Tech and has since struggled to maintain health for an extended stretch. Smelter is a deep league Dynasty stash at best.

49ers WR DeAndre Smelter is “week to week” with an undisclosed “condition.”
Smelter was inactive for San Francisco’s preseason opener and coach Chip Kelly has already ruled him out for the second exhibition. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat recently predicted Smelter will spend the 2016 season on injured reserve. Smelter spent all of his rookie campaign on an injured list, as well.
