Steelers parted ways with Senior Special Teams coach Derius Swinton amidst club policy violation.

The nature of the “violation” appears to be purposefully omitted, although the fact that Swinton lasted less than three months with the club raises significant questions. It remains uncertain whether the full details will ever be released, with the only thing we know for sure being that Swinton is out in Pittsburgh.

Steelers hired Derius Swinton as their new senior special teams assistant coach.

Swinton coached with the Raiders over the last three seasons. He was hired as the Raiders’ assistant special teams coach in 2023 and was promoted to interim special teams coordinator in November 2025. He served as the Chargers’ special teams coordinator before that.

Chargers fired special teams coordinator Derius Swinton.

Swinton, a longtime special teams assistant coach in the league, lasted one year as LA’s special teams coordinator. The Chargers had the fifth most kickoff returns yards and forced the tenth highest rate of touchbacks on the year. Dustin Hopkins helped stabilize a rocky kicking game as the Chargers ranked ninth in field goal accuracy in 2021. With connections to several teams -- including the Bears and Cardinals -- Swinton will likely get another shot somewhere else in 2022.
