    Dion Sims announced his retirement.
The veteran tight end walks away after a combined six seasons with the Dolphins and Bears. Sims battled a concerning concussion history going back to his time at Michigan State, eventually forcing him to hang up his cleats with 91 catches for 888 yards and nine touchdowns as a primary blocking tight end. Chicago previously released Sims last February after he finished 2018 on injured reserve.

    Bears released TE Dion Sims.
The move saves the Bears $6 million against the salary cap. This was a no-brainer after Sims missed half of last season with injury issues and a concerning concussion history. Sims appeared in 22 games with the Bears the last two years, posting a 17-189-1 receiving line. He’s merely a blocker at 28 years old.

Dolphins signed fourth-round TE Dion Sims to a four-year contract.
The 106th overall pick, Sims was primarily used as a blocker at Michigan State, but has slimmed down and is a natural pass catcher, even if he offers no explosive traits with the football in his hands. The Fins seem to believe Sims can grow into an Alge Crumpler type. He’s expected to play significant snaps as a rookie behind blocking-deficient starter Dustin Keller.

The Palm Beach Post believes fourth-round TE Dion Sims may be the “linchpin of the Dolphins’ draft class.”
Beat writer Ben Volin expects Sims to be the Dolphins’ primary blocking tight end, and to potentially lead all Miami rookies in snaps. Sims was one of the draft’s top blocking tight ends, so it’s not a far-fetched guess. Sims won’t be a major pass-catching threat behind Dustin Keller.

Dolphins selected Michigan State TE Dion Sims with the No. 106 overall pick.
Sims (6-foot-4 7/8, 262) caught 36 passes for 475 yards (13.2 YPR) and two TDs as a junior before turning pro. He played at over 280 pounds and focused on an in-line position, where Sims is right there with Travis Kelce as this draft’s best blocking tight end. Sims ran 4.75 with a 1.60 ten-yard split and 35-inch vertical at the Combine, so he is athletic and may develop into more of a underneath receiving option in the NFL. Sims could see significant snaps as the blocking tight end, an area where Dustin Keller struggles.

OC Mike Sherman said the 64 snaps TE Charles Clay played in Week 1 were probably too much.
Clay was originally slated to be an H-back and backup this season. But with Dustin Keller (knee) out for the year, he played on 91.4 percent of the offensive snaps and posted a 5/54/0 line on six targets against the Browns. The only way the Dolphins can reduce Clay’s playing is if they put more trust in rookie Dion Sims (15 snaps) or Hard Knocks whipping boy Michael Egnew (21 snaps). It’s hard to see that happening.

Coach Joe Philbin suggested he wants Dolphins fourth-round TE Dion Sims to play more this week against the Colts.
Sims played 15 snaps in the opener. Charles Clay played 64. Michael Egnew played 21. OC Mike Sherman already said earlier in the week that Clay likely played too much. Sims is by far the best blocker of the group. His insertion into the lineup could help a running game that worked too hard for yards in Week 1.

Fourth-round rookie Dion Sims has been working as the Dolphins’ No. 2 tight end early in training camp.
“I like [Sims] a lot,” coach Joe Philbin said. “He’s doing a lot of good things. He has a chance to be a very good blocker in this league. He’s got soft hands. He’s had a very good camp. He’s going to be a good player.” Sims has leapfrogged second-year TE Michael Egnew on the depth chart, but that was never going to be tough. Look for Sims to see his action on the line of scrimmage in year one.
  • FA Tight End #88
Dolphins rookie TE Dion Sims played a season-high 44 snaps in Sunday’s Week 13 win over the Jets.
Fins OC Mike Sherman explained Sims played more as a function of intending “to run the ball more,” which is a surprising approach even with 20-20 hindsight against the Jets’ league-best run defense. A fourth-round pick out of Michigan State, Sims has had more of an impact as a run blocker than pass catcher this season. Sims has been targeted just seven times through 11 appearances.

Dion Sims has resumed practicing, but remains in the concussion protocol.
Sims is day to day with a decent shot at returning for Week 9. Jordan Cameron (concussion) remains out indefinitely.
