DJ Johnson has elected free agency.

Johnson was removed from the Rays’ 40-man roster earlier this week and will become a free agent rather than accept an outright minor-league assignment. The 32-year-old righty was acquired from Cleveland in a midseason deal, but wound up making just three appearances before being shut down with a right shoulder sprain.

Rays transferred RHP DJ Johnson to the 60-day injured list.

The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster. Johnson is dealing with a sprained shoulder and isn’t expected back this season.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that DJ Johnson (shoulder) is expected to miss “substantial time.”

Johnson was placed on the injured list on Tuesday with a right shoulder sprain, and the stay on the IL will not be a short one. “It’s pretty severe,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. Luis Head was recalled in Johnson’s place, and it sounds like there’s a good chance we don’t see Johnson back in 2021.

Indians reassigned RHP DJ Johnson to minor league camp.

The cut doesn’t come as a surprise. Johnson, a non-roster invitee, struggled with a 9.64 ERA and 4/7 K/BB ratio over 4 2/3 innings this spring. The 31-year-old holds a 4.88 ERA over 35 relief appearances in the majors, all with the Rockies. Within the announcement of the cut for Johnson, the Indians added prospect infielder Aaron Bracho to their player pool.
