Dropping off: Hector Neris (46th), Ryan Madson (48th), Luis Garcia (57th), Darren O’Day (69th), Joe Biagini (70th)
- The Tigers wanted Shane Greene to spend the first half of the season as a closer and then hopefully trade him at the peak of his value. Now that’s off the table, courtesy of a shoulder problem that materialized not long after he worked on a fourth straight day for the second time this season. Why is a non-contender letting its closer work four straight days? Or pitch in both games of a doubleheader? It doesn’t make a lot of sense. Joe Jimenez will close for now and could keep the job once Greene returns, depending on how he performs.
- I have six Giants in the rankings, from Will Smith at No. 36 to Reyes Montoya closing out the list at No. 85. Bruce Bochy has never been known for being particularly creative in the ninth. He’s not going to decide his closer each day based on gut or feel; he’s just going to choose a guy and stick with him until there’s reason not to. Sam Dyson gave him reason to make a change, so now Smith has gotten the call. If Smith blows a chance right away, then Tony Watson is probably next in line.
- Orioles reliever Michael Givens isn’t pitching very well at the moment, but he still moves up the rankings this month. It’s a near certainty that Zach Britton is going to be traded (possibly to a team that would use him as a setup man). Brad Brach is also a free agent at season’s end and is likely to be moved, and Darren O’Day is now entirely out of the mix after season-ending hamstring surgery. Givens might be the last man standing in that Baltimore pen. Miguel Castro could be another candidate to close.
