Dropping off: Andrew Kittredge (22nd), J.P. Feyereisen (30th), Tony Santillan (34th), Hansel Robles (41st), Daniel Hudson (45th), Hector Neris (60th), Tyler Kinley (73rd), Art Warren (74th), Matt Barnes (75th)
- Kenley Jansen was dropped from fourth to 10th after a recurrence of his irregular heartbeat. A.J. Minter and Will Smith will be candidates for saves in his absence.
- Trades will likely wreak havoc with these rankings next month. The Twins, Giants, Red Sox, Phillies, Rays and Marlins seem like candidates to deal for closers, while other contenders could also trade for closing-type relievers to serve as setup men. Among the candidates to be moved are David Bednar, David Robertson, Daniel Bard, Jorge Lopez, Gregory Soto, Tanner Rainey, Scott Barlow, Paul Sewald and Mark Melancon. Some of those guys will stay put, some will wind up on closers on different teams and others could turn into setup men on contenders.
I’ve tried to account for some of those trade possibilities in these rankings. Bednar, for instance, is probably a top-10 closer at this point and might be a top-five guy closing for the Giants or Red Sox over the rest of the season, but he could also wind up spending the final two months setting up for the Dodgers or Blue Jays. As a result, he’s 13th here. Robertson and Bard are probably the most likely of the current closers to end up as setup men for contenders come August, so they’re lower than they otherwise might be.
- I’d have Michael Fulmer higher, but he’s at least as likely as Soto to get traded. Heck, Detroit could move Andrew Chafin, too. Alex Lange might wind up as the closest thing the team has to a closer down the stretch.
- Scott Effross has overtaken Rowan Wick as the Cubs’ No. 2 reliever here. He averages just 90 mph with his fastball, but he has a 58/9 K/BB ratio in 45 2/3 innings since debuting last year, and he’s been even more effective against lefties than righties thus far. Perhaps the Cubs would instead choose a veteran to replace Robertson, but Mychal Givens and Chris Martin are strong candidates to be traded as well.
