May Second Baseman Rankings

Jeff McNeil

Jeff McNeil

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Here is the May edition of my rest-of-season position rankings and overall top 300 for 5x5 leagues. As you might have noticed, the weekly Strike Zone is off the menu for load management reasons this year. However, I plan to continue to present monthly rankings updates in this spot.

As always, players are ranked by position and then combined into an overall top 300 list.

  • The additions of Mookie Betts, Nico Hoerner and Ryan McMahon to the second base list make it look like the guys in the middle are tumbling, but it’s not really anything they’re doing wrong. Jeff McNeil, for instance, fell from 13th to 20th here, but he’s actually up a couple of spots in the outfield rankings.

  • Given that they were making some changes, I’m surprised the Royals didn’t send down Michael Massey on Tuesday. Maybe they figured that’d be sending the wrong message after he finally drew his first walk of the season on Saturday. I thought Massey would be a decent second baseman for Kansas City, but it 81 plate appearances, he’s collected one extra-base hit and amassed a 31/1 K/BB ratio. Demoting him would be a mercy. Also, Samad Taylor has made a nice case for a callup by hitting .337/.404/.480 in Triple-A. I don’t think Taylor is a long-term regular, but he would be pretty interesting for fantasy purposes; he already has 12 steals this year and he’s totaled 148 steals in 494 games as a minor leaguer.
