September Catcher Rankings

Time for some September rankings. If you’re hoping for a callup bonanza, I expect that you’ll be disappointed; most of the big names are either up or they’re not coming. There will be final-month surprises, of course, and predicting what any player is going to do over the course of 25 games or so is a fool’s errand. But, then, that’s why they pay me.

Remember that players are listed at the position at which they’re most valuable (C > SS > 2B > 3B > 1B/OF).

Dropping off: Buster Posey (3rd), John Hicks (15th), Max Stassi (35th), John Ryan Murphy (44th), Jose Briceno (46th)

  • Evan Gattis is still a top-five fantasy catcher for the year, but with Tyler White having seized possession of the DH job in Houston, Gattis is droppable in one-catcher leagues at this point. There’s always the chance he’ll go back to playing regularly, but I expect that White will remain the superior hitter.

  • The Giants figure to give Aramis Garcia a fair amount of time behind the plate with Posey out for the year, but there’s nothing much there for fantasy purposes. He hit .233/.285/.381 with 11 homers in 339 at-bats between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento this year. Nick Hundley has a better chance of being a useful second catcher in two-catcher mixed leagues.

  • Francisco Mejia has been hitting better for Triple-A El Paso of late (.293/.326/.500 with four homers in August), but he still hasn’t logged any time in the outfield at all, suggesting that he’ll have a pretty limited role with the Padres as Austin Hedges’ backup in September.
