Marcus Semien drives in two as Mets top Phillies

Wilson was called up on Thursday and threw two scoreless innings in his lone appearance for the Phillies. With Max Lazar getting sent down, the Phillies will be making two additions on Monday. Kyle Backhus returning from the IL is one of them. The other is likely to be Alan Rangel, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber, and Rangel could either start or work bulk innings in what had been Andrew Painter’s spot.

Lazar’s first stint on the active roster this year proved to be a short one. He had allowed two runs in four innings since being recalled Tuesday.

Garcia was released by the Phillies after the 2022 season, but he kept pitching in indy ball and joined the Reds’ Double-A affiliate late last season. After moving back to the pen this year, he had a 3.03 ERA and a 54/12 K/BB in 35 2/3 innings for Triple-A Louisville. No word yet on whose roster spot he’ll be claiming.

Muñoz allowed a one-out single to bring the tying run to the plate, but he struck out Willson Contreras and Jarren Duran to end the game without much of a threat and earn his 13th save. The closer has pitched way better than his 5.27 ERA and should be in for a much better second half of the season if his home run luck corrects back to the norm.

Not a bad encore after his three-homer display on Saturday night. Schwarber walked and scored a run in the first inning before hitting an absolute missile in the second. The ball traveled an estimated 418 feet, which really doesn’t do it justice. Similar to Saturday’s homers, it was a majestic blast which found a home in the second deck. Schwarber is up to 29 homers, four more than Yordan Alvarez for tops in MLB. He’s well on his way to another 50-homer season. If Schwarber manages to pull it off, which looks very likely right now, he’ll become the first player in Phillies history with two 50-homer seasons.

After a brutal start to his Red Sox career, Durbin is starting to heat up with the summer weather. In his last 20 games, he’s gone 23-for-72 (.278) with four home runs, 13 RBI, and four steals. He’s playing himself back onto the radar in shallower formats.

He struck out seven. Aside from a Carson Benge homer in the third, Wheeler was mostly in command against New York’s lineup, but he ran out of gas in the sixth where he walked three in the frame and saw a run come home on a fielder’s choice after Don Mattingly decided to stick with him for another batter. Jonathan Bowlan took over from there and struck out Marcus Semien swinging to close the book on Wheeler’s night. There was some nervousness about Wheeler’s return from the injured list, but here he is at 7-1 with a 2.11 ERA through 11 starts. He actually lines up to face the Mets again on Friday, this time at his former stomping grounds at Citi Field.

Peterson walked back-to-back batters to start the game, which set the tone for the evening. The southpaw ran a ton of deep counts and it ultimately cost him. His biggest downfall was a three-run homer off the bat of Kyle Schwarber in the second inning. Peterson struck out five and walked four in the loss and now holds a 6.09 ERA on the year. He didn’t exactly make the case to get more starts in the near future, but the Mets aren’t exactly overflowing with options at the moment.

Tolle struck out two and walked two while throwing 67 percent of his pitches for strikes. He had good command of his fastballs on the day, but he struggled to get into two-strike counts, with just five total whiffs and a six percent swinging strike rate on the day. He couldn’t really command his sinker to lefties, which made it harder for him to get chases with his four-seamer, and while his four-seamer did miss some bats against righties, it was his only pitch that really did so. The rookie will look to continue to iron out the kinks in a tough start against the Yankees next week.

Not quite a cycle, but still acceptable. Harper doubled in the second inning, and homered in the fifth before reaching on a single in the seventh. However, he wasn’t able to get another plate appearance to see if he could duplicate Saturday’s feat. Leading into Saturday, Harper was in a 1-for-22 funk at the plate, but it’s safe to say he’s locked in again.
