Brandon Pfaadt is likely to be recalled to start Tuesday’s game against the Giants.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters that Pfaadt will take the ball against San Francisco unless he’s abducted by aliens. In other words, he’s lined up to start Tuesday night at Chase Field barring a full-on X-Files scenario. The 27-year-old gets another look in Arizona’s injury-depleted rotation following three straight encouraging outings for Triple-A Reno after an early-June demotion. He’s unlikely to shoulder a significant workload, but there’s definitely some short-term appeal in deeper mixed leagues against a pedestrian Giants lineup.

Brandon Pfaadt allowed one run with two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a win over the Giants on Tuesday.

Pfaadt was outstanding on Tuesday, holding the Giants to just three baserunners through five shutout innings before Luis Arraez took him deep for a solo homer with one out in the sixth. That would end the day for Pfaadt at 66 pitches with two strikeouts. It was his first start in the rotation since early April. The 27-year-old right-hander will look to build on the strong start when he takes a 5.40 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and a 33/18 K/BB ratio across 43 1/3 innings into a start against the Padres in San Diego on Monday.

Diamondbacks recalled RHP Brandon Pfaadt from Triple-A Reno.

We can safely confirm that Pfaadt wasn’t abducted by aliens and will take the ball for Tuesday’s contest against the Giants at Chase Field. There’s some definite streaming appeal here for fantasy managers in deeper mixed leagues since San Francisco has been one of the least productive lineups in the game this season. The 27-year-old doesn’t offer a ton of upside based on his track record, but he’s been pitching well at Triple-A since being demoted earlier this month. He’s a decent zero-risk flyer in this spot.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Michael Soroka on the 15-day injured list with a left glute strain.

This is especially painful on the heels of Ryne Nelson’s injury. It originally sounded like Brandon Pfaadt would make at least one more minor league start, but he might be needed before then. Mitch Bratt and Dylan Ray don’t seem like great options at the moment. Tommy Henry is available, but he has a 7.67 ERA for Reno.

Michael Soroka, who was forced from his start Friday, will undergo an MRI on Saturday due to left glute discomfort.

The injury was originally announced as left hip discomfort, but it has since moved down a bit. If Soroka joins Ryne Nelson on the IL for the D-backs, then Brandon Pfaadt figures to get a rotation spot a little earlier than anticipated.

Pfaadt will need to get stretched out as a starter to rejoin the rotation, and this figures to be a somewhat lengthy assignment in light of that news. Pfaadt wasn’t exactly helping the team in the bullpen anyway, as he had just two holds while allowing four home runs and 13 earned runs in 15 innings.

Diamondbacks activated RHP Merrill Kelly from the 15-day injured list.

Kelly, who was supposed to be Arizona’s Opening Day starter this season, will take the ball on Tuesday night against the Orioles for his season debut. His return pushes Brandon Pfaadt to the bullpen until further notice. The 37-year-old veteran right-hander offers some appeal as a back-end rotation stabilizer in deeper fantasy formats after registering a strong pristine 3.52 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 167/48 K/BB ratio across 184 innings last year between the Diamondbacks and Rangers

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Brandon Pfaadt will go to the bullpen when Merrill Kelly (back) is activated for Tuesday’s start against the Orioles.

Pfaadt loses his spot in Arizona’s rotation with Kelly back from the injured list while Ryne Nelson and Michael Soroka remain. The 27-year-old righty has posted an inflated 5.94 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 11/6 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings over three starts. His stuff should play up in shorter bursts out of the bullpen, but he’s a non-factor for fantasy purposes at this point in his career. It’s surprising considering he was an elite pitching prospect just a few years ago.

Brandon Pfaadt lost to the Phillies after allowing four runs — three earned — in six innings Saturday.

All of the runs came in the third on back-to-back homers from Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper. One was unearned because Alec Bohm started the inning with a grounder that ate up Geraldo Perdomo (based on the current standards, we were a little surprised it was ruled an error). Pfaadt’s velocity today was down about one mph from his season average. The cutter he added last year and his increased ability to generate grounders have kept him viable for the Diamondbacks, but his rotation spot is in jeopardy now with Merrill Kelly coming back. There’s a decent chance he’ll be sent down.

Merrill Kelly (back) threw 83 pitches during an extended spring training game on Thursday.

That’s expected to be the final tuneup before the 37-year-old hurler rejoins the Diamondbacks’ rotation next week. It remains unclear who he’ll supplant from the club’s rotation though Brandon Pfaadt could be on the chopping block after struggling through his first two starts.

Brandon Pfaadt went just 4 2/3 innings while allowing three runs in a no-decision against Atlanta on Sunday.

Pfaadt settled down after giving up a solo homer to Drake Baldwin in the first. He unsettled in the fifth, however, giving up a pair of runs with one of them coming on a wild pitch. Pfaadt shows flashes of being a solid fantasy option, but there are just too many mediocre efforts like this one to suggest he’s a set-it-and-forget-it option.

Alec Bohm homered, doubled and walked Saturday in the Phillies’ 6-1 victory over the Royals.

Bohm is batting .273 with 10 homers and 31 RBI in his last 49 games. He’s still not guaranteed to be especially valuable going forward, but with the Phillies committed to hitting him in the middle of the order, he has a legitimate shot at 100 RBI in his final year before free agency.

That Luzardo’s bad outings have been particularly bad denied him an All-Star gig, but he’s 7-4 with a 3.75 ERA after tonight, and the Phillies are 12-6 in his starts. He walked none in this one and has a 125/33 K/BB through 103 1/3 innings. He’ll likely make his next start Thursday in Philadelphia.

Wacha as an All-Star makes a lot of sense if maybe he’s Kansas City’s only representative, but Bobby Witt Jr. is the team’s starting shortstop. Wacha is going to his second All-Star Game anyway, though there seemed to be better picks available. He’s 5-6 with a 3.45 ERA ahead of his final start of the first half against the Mets.

Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer and drove in two runs in a win for the Dodgers on Saturday over the Padres.

Freeman also singled and a walke for a three-reach day. He gave the Dodgers all the offense they’d need with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the Los Angeles bullpen breezing through the San Diego lineup when he connected on his 15th homer of the campaign. He also singled in a run, and he’s up to 49 RBI while improving his line to .297/.387/.508. Regression comes for everyone at some point. It doesn’t appear to be coming for Freeman anytime soon.

Will Klein worked a scoreless ninth and struck out two to get a save against the Padres on Saturday.

Klein had some shaky outings in June as seen in a 4.32 ERA over the month, but for the most part, he’s been one of the more effective relief hurlers on the Dodgers. It’s the second save of the season for the 26-year-old, and while it’s far from a guarantee he’ll see more, he’s looked the part when given the opportunity. He also has already picked up 11 holds, so his appeal in leagues that value that statistics is obvious.

Griffin Canning worked four innings and allowed just one run, but he still picked up a loss against the Dodgers on Saturday.

Canning worked behind Wandy Peralta — who fired a scoreless inning before exiting — and while Canning does take the loss, it appeared to work. The right-hander was able to strike out four against two walks, and he was able to generate a respectable nine swings and misses over 73 pitches. Canning still has an unsightly 6.71 ERA, but he’ll get a chance to lower that Thursday in a scheduled appearance against the Diamondbacks. It seems awfully likely that one will be working behind an opener, too.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out 10 over seven shutout innings to lead the Dodgers to a 3-0 victory over the Padres on Saturday.

Yamamoto was brilliant, allowing just three hits and two walks to go with the aforementioned punchouts. He generated 16 swings and misses over exactly 100 pitches, and six of those came on a splitter that the Padres simply couldn’t handle. That’s now 13 quality starts for Yamamoto over 16 chances, and his ERA is now an outstanding 2.49 over that timeframe. He was named an All-Star prior to Saturday’s victory, but his final start before that game comes Saturday against the Diamondbacks in Arizona.

He’s also done a solid job behind the plate, and the 23-year-old has given no reason to believe he won’t be the long-term answer behind the plate for the Marlins, with all due respect to Agustin Ramirez.

In addition to the two-run jack, Lopez also added an RBI double. He’s been remarkable in 2026, and those three knocks now give him a .341 average with a .506 slugging percentage that shows there’s been plenty of hard contact between the dinks and dunks for the 27-year-old. It’s more than fair to wonder when the regression is coming, but Lopez just keeps hitting, and he’s passing the eye test in the process. He’s more than deserving of the first All-Star selection he procured prior to Saturday’s win.
