Spencer Torkelson finishes 0-for-4 in 14-0 victory

While the Tigers were racking up 14 runs, Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-4 with a sac fly and grounded into a double play Tuesday against the Orioles.

The GIDP came against catcher Chadwick Tromp in the eighth. If the Tigers sell, one imagines Torkelson has to be very much available. He’s hitting .207/.300/.414 in 417 plate appearances, and he’s been a real asset for half of one season in the last three years. Maybe he can pull an Andrew Vaughn, but if he’s not considerably better the rest of the way, he should be a non-tender candidate.
Angels' Joyce firmly among MLB's 'best relievers'
James Schiano breaks down Ben Joyce's recent play after he recorded his third straight save on Tuesday night, sharing why he needs to be "scooped up" in fantasy leagues.

Gabriel Moreno went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Wednesday, propelling the Diamondbacks to a 7-6 extra-inning win over the Red Sox.

Moreno was a thorn in the side of the Red Sox in this series at Fenway Park, tagging Payton Tolle for a two-run double with two outs in the fifth innings of this one after clubbing a grand slam during Tuesday’s contest. Perhaps it’s only fitting since he was once the top prospect for the division-rival Blue Jays. He’s settled in nicely as a run-producing middle-of-the-order mainstay for the Diamondbacks.

Mickey Gasper homered for the third consecutive game during Wednesday’s extra-inning loss to the Diamondbacks.

Gasper delivered the key knock for the Red Sox in this one, taking Arizona starter Brandon Pfaadt deep for a game-tying blast with two outs in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough as the Diamondbacks managed to pull out the win in extra innings. The 30-year-old journeyman went 34 straight games without a homer before going deep in three straight games against Arizona in this series. At this point, he should be trying to get traded to the NL West in the offseason just so he can face them a few more times.

Ryan Waldschmidt went 2-for-3 with an RBI and also stole a base in Wednesday’s extra-inning win over the Red Sox.

Waldschmidt also drew a pair of walks, reaching base safely in four of his five plate appearances during the extra-inning marathon at Fenway Park. The 23-year-old rookie has really turned things around in the last couple weeks and is up to .279/.342/.391 with two homers, 17 RBI and seven steals across 61 games this season.

Nolan Arenado went 2-for-5 with an RBI against the Red Sox on Wednesday in his return to the lineup.

Arenado put Arizona ahead with a broken-bat single to shallow left field in the 10th inning. The 35-year-old veteran was back at third base and hitting fifth after missing two games with an intercostal strain. It doesn’t appear to be a significant concern moving forward.

Brandon Pfaadt surrendered five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Red Sox on Wednesday.

Pfaadt saw his remarkable streak snapped at 32 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run when Nick Sogard blasted a leadoff homer on the very first pitch of the ballgame. It was the first round-tripper he’s surrendered in eight starts dating back to June 30. He was burned by the long ball in this one, serving up three of them for the first time since last June. It was a three-run homer by Mickey Gasper with two outs in the sixth inning that accounted for most of the damage against him. He finished with a season-high eight strikeouts and didn’t hand out a free pass. The 27-year-old has earned fantasy managers’ trust again with a sustained run of success, allowing two earned runs or fewer in nine of 10 starts since returning to the majors back on June 30. He’ll face the Cubs on Tuesday in his next start.

Payton Tolle was charged with three runs over five innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.

Tolle was cruising along, carrying a shutout into the fifth inning, before running into some trouble. He surrendered back-to-back doubles and loaded the bases with two outs in the frame, which led to a two-run double by Gabriel Moreno. He finished with six strikeouts and only handed out a pair of free passes. The 23-year-old rookie southpaw has looked like a legitimate fantasy ace, working into the sixth inning while allowing three earned runs or fewer in five consecutive starts since July 27. He’s also posted a sublime 38/7 K/BB ratio across 30 1/3 innings during that span. He’ll try to keep things rolling with a favorable road matchup against the Marlins on Tuesday.

    Royals released OF Starling Marte.

There’s probably a spot out there somewhere for Marte in a bench role to close out the season. The 37-year-old veteran went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. He hit just .242/.298/.314 with two homers and two steals across 168 plate appearances for the Royals this season.

Cardinals re-signed OF Bligh Madris to a minor league contract.

Madris is back with the Cardinals after hitting .175 (11-for-63) with four homers in 17 games for the SSG Landers in Korea. The 30-year-old outfielder hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2024 campaign. He’s merely organizational depth at this stage of his career.

    Rockies released RHP Michael Lorenzen.

Lorenzen was cut loose by Colorado after passing through waivers unclaimed. Apparently, no team was willing to pick up the remainder of his contract. The 34-year-old veteran struggled to a bloated 7.08 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 82/49 K/BB ratio across 115 2/3 innings in his Rockies debut this season. Given his track record, there’s a chance another organization is willing to bring him on as an innings eater for the final five weeks of the season.

Reds signed RHP Darius Vines to a minor league contract.

Vines was pitching in the independent Mexican League this season. He hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since making four appearances for the Braves back in 2024. The 28-year-old will heads to Triple-A Louisville and represents a zero-risk lottery ticket for Cincinnati over the final five weeks of the season.
