Nick Kurtz (arm) exits game after hit-by-pitch

Gulp. Hopefully, Kurtz will prove to be fine after being hit by a pitch in Wednesday’s game. If not, the A’s would probably recall Max Muncy and put him at third and Tommy White at first for now.

It’s a massive relief that Kurtz appears to have avoided serious injury after he was drilled by Red Sox starter Patrick Sandoval in the first inning. It’s a bit unclear whether he already underwent X-rays, but the fact that the Athletics are calling it a contusion is a massive relief. He’s presumably day-to-day heading into Thursday’s series finale.

Kurtz has gone 1-for-8 with a three-run homer in a pair of games since coming back from the injured list over the weekend. The 23-year-old offensive force will get a breather with hard-throwing lefty Peyton Tolle toeing the rubber for Boston in this one. It’ll be Jeff McNeil taking over at first base.

Kurtz’ home run was his 21st of the season. He hit a three-run home run off Cole Sands in the sixth inning. Kurtz’ home run was his first since July 3 against the Marlins. Entering play Sunday, he was 0-for-22 with 13 strikeouts and no walks in his last six games. Kurtz is hitting .264 with a .901 OPS and 69 RBI.

The Athletics are firmly out of the playoff race, and might continue to lose ground with Kurtz out, so that might impact how aggressive the Athletics want to be in bringing him back quickly.

A clearer timetable should emerge soon, but fantasy managers should be prepared for an extended absence given the nature of the injury.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the 23-year-old slugger will be heading to the injured list for this one. It’s unclear when Kurtz suffered the injury, as he exited Wednesday’s game due to illness but returned on Thursday and played the entirety of the game against the Tigers. While no move has been made yet, there’s still time for it to be done before Friday’s game starts. Fantasy managers may want to use an alternative for the weekend if possible. Joey Meneses will start in his place on Friday and could see extended action there if Kurtz winds up on the injured list.

Kurtz was pulled from Wednesday’s game in the second inning after he threw up in the team’s dugout, which caused his removal. He’s back at first base and batting second for the A’s against Tigers’ left-hander Framber Valdez on Thursday evening in Detroit.
