Will Benson has elected free agency.

Benson played a major role in the Reds’ outfield over the previous three seasons but wound up seeing just 114 plate appearances in 2026 while slashing a gruesome .188/.310/.333 with three homers, six RBI and a 38/16 K/BB ratio. He’s now free to peddle his wares on the open market.

Benson was sent to the minors on June 23rd after hitting .188/.310/.333 in 114 plate appearances this season with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate. He was then designated for assignment about a week later to make room on the 40-man roster and will now return to Louisville.
  • CIN Right Fielder #30
Benson showed some flashes of power/speed combo fantasy potential at various points during his career, but was never quite able to establish himself as a long-term everyday option for the Reds in a corner-outfield role. The 28-year-old has been removed from Cincinnati’s crowded 40-man roster after being shipped to the minors back in late June. He figures to attract some interest on waivers.
  • CIN Right Fielder #30
Benson is hitting just .188/.310/.333 in 114 plate appearances this season with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate. Now 28 years old and with a 33.3 percent career MLB strikeout rate in 405 games, you have to wonder if Benson’s time in Cincinnati may be drawing to a close. Noelvi Marte could also be pushed off of right field if the Reds want to play Spencer Steer out there with Elly De La Cruz back.
  • CIN Right Fielder #30
Benson’s home run was his third of the year. He pinch hit to lead-off the bottom of the ninth inning and tied the game with a solo home run off Royals reliever Lucas Erceg. Benson is a bench bat who will continue to see most of his at-bats come against right-handed pitching.
  • CIN Right Fielder #4
Marte has started just three times in five contests to open the season, which is a bit perplexing considering how he finished last year as one of Cincinnati’s core offensive contributors. It’s notable that he’s in the lineup to face Pirates right-hander Bubba Chandler in this one. The 24-year-old former top prospect will continue splitting time with Will Benson, who is in left field on Tuesday night with Spencer Steer on the bench. The emergence of Sal Stewart and return of Eugenio Suárez has created a logjam for the Reds with Marte drawing the short straw for now.
  • CIN Left Fielder #30
Benson has started against both right-handers the Reds have faced so far. We rather thought that’d be happening mostly at Spencer Steer’s expense, rather than Noelvi Marte’s, but as long as Benson has that strong-side platoon role, he should offer value in deeper leagues. The 27-year-old had a 15-percent barrel rate and a 54-percent hard-hit rate in his 230 plate appearances last year.
  • CIN Right Fielder #4
Marte has now sat against both righties the Reds have faced this season, which is a bit confusing considering he had reverse splits last year. To start the year, it seems like Will Benson will be starting against right-handed pitchers, which makes it hard to roster Marte in shallower formats right now, especially considering the Reds are set to face right-handed starters in eight of their next nine games.
  • CIN Left Fielder #30
The Reds probably wouldn’t have brought in JJ Bleday if they didn’t think he was better than Benson, but Benson, who has a 1.050 OPS through 24 plate appearances, seems like the more interesting of the two from here. Both seem likely to make the team out of spring training, and one could start against most right-handers, assuming that the Reds don’t make Spencer Steer their primary left fielder. Given that Steer has started just once in the outfield thus far, it wouldn’t seem to be the plan.
  • CIN Outfield #30
That the Reds considered JJ Bleday an apparent upgrade from Benson doesn’t like great news for the 27-year-old, and now they could now bypass both and play Spencer Steer in left field after signing Eugenio Suárez. Still, Benson might be the Reds’ best option in left against righties. Statcast thought he was pretty unlucky to finish at .226/.273/.435 last year, and along with his improved EV numbers, he did nice work to lower his strikeout rate last season.
  • CIN Right Fielder #30
Benson ended up at .226/.273/.435 in 253 plate appearances, but the drop in his strikeout rate from a career mark of 35.5% to 26.5% last season was encouraging, especially in combination with his career-best 54% hard-hit rate. The assumption is that the newly signed JJ Bleday will get the nod over Benson against right-handers initially, but the guess here is that Benson proves to be the better player of the two, potentially giving him some value in deeper formats.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start Game 3 of the NLDS against the Braves on Tuesday.

Yamamoto said through an interpreter that he’s willing to pitch on short rest, or in relief, if needed, this postseason. That doesn’t come as a surprise after witnessing his herculean effort during last year’s World Series title run. He’ll get the ball for a pivotal showdown at Truist Park in Atlanta with the best-of-five series tied after a pair of games in Los Angeles.

Padres signed RHP Roel Ramírez to a minor league contract.

Ramírez hasn’t pitched in the majors since making two relief appearances from the Cardinals from 2020-2021. The 31-year-old journeyman hasn’t pitched in affiliated ball since the 2023 campaign. He posted a spectacular 1.76 ERA with a 63/9 K/BB ratio across 46 innings for Tijuana in the independent Mexican League this past season.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that Max Fried will likely start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Rays on Wednesday.

Boone seemingly left the door ajar for New York to pivot, adding that Carlos Rodón is in line to start a potential Game 4 matchup. All signs point to Fried toeing the rubber when the series heads back to New York later this week. The 32-year-old southpaw allowed one run over six innings against the Red Sox to close out the AL Wild Card Series last Wednesday. It’ll be Fried’s 16th career postseason start and 24th appearance overall since 2018.

Rays manager Kevin Cash confirmed that Nick Martinez will start Game 3 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Wednesday.

Martinez will be making his first career postseason start in Yankee Stadium after making eight relief appearances since 2022. The 36-year-old veteran was a bit of an unexpected revelation in his Rays debut, posting a career-best 3.10 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 109/26 K/BB ratio across 180 innings over 31 regular-season starts.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is at second base and hitting sixth against the Rays in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is sticking with the same lineup that was shutout by Rays ace Drew Rasmussen, who carried a no-hit bid into the eighth inning, and closer Bryan Baker in a Game 1 defeat. It’ll be eight left-handed batters getting a look at Freddy Peralta as he makes his Tampa Bay postseason debut in this one. Here’s the full lineup: Ben Rice (DH), Cody Bellinger (LF), Luis García Jr. (1B), Spencer Jones (RF), George Lombard Jr. (SS), Chisholm (2B), Trent Grisham (CF), Austin Wells (C) and Ryan McMahon (3B).

Junior Caminero is at third base and hitting third for Game 2 of the ALDS against the Yankees on Monday.

Rays manager Kevin Cash isn’t making any changes following a series-opening victory where Jonathan Aranda’s solo homer was enough for a nearly-flawless Drew Rasmussen, who took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning. Caminero, who is likely to finish near the top of AL MVP Award balloting, finished a phenomenal regular season with 42 home runs, reaching the lofty 40-homer plateau for the second straight season. Here’s the full lineup: Yandy Díaz (DH), Jonathan Aranda (1B), Junior Caminero (3B), Liam Hicks (C), Chandler Simpson (LF), Victor Mesa Jr. (RF), Jonny DeLuca (CF), Richie Palacios (2B) and Taylor Walls (SS).

Padres activated Walker Buehler from the paternity list.

Randy Vásquez was removed from San Diego’s playoff roster in a corresponding move. Buehler was away from the club on paternity leave since the outset of the NLDS against the Brewers. He figures to pitch in relief for the remainder of the best-of-five series, which Milwaukee leads 2-0 at the moment.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Craig Breslow insisted that Garrett Crochet (shoulder) is one hundred percent healthy heading into the offseason.

In his press conference, Breslow mentioned that Crochet felt some initial discomfort in his shoulder back in April, but the Red Sox reviewed his medicals and decided it was best to take a long-term approach to his rehab. Specifically, Breslow said the team focused on strengthening Crochet’s shoulder, not simply getting him healthy enough to pitch in 2026, but hoping to withstand any further injury in future seasons. That also meant changes to his posture and mechanics to smooth over any residual issues that had built up from the shoulder discomfort. The team feels that he is fully healthy heading into the offseason, and there’s a chance his shoulder is now healthier than it was in 2025.

Tristan Peters and Andrew Benintendi are both back in the starting lineup for Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.

Benintendi will hit fifth and be the designated hitter, while Tristan Peters will bat sixth and play center field. Both of them were out for Game 1 against left-handed starter Parker Messick. While Benintendi never entered the game, Peters replaced Randal Grichuk when the Guardians went to the bullpen and went 1-for-2 with a single. Brenton Doyle and Tommy Pham will head to the bench for Game 2.

Sam Antonacci is starting in left field and batting first against the Guardians in Game 2 of the ALDS.

Antonacci was not in the lineup for Game 1 with the Guardians throwing left-hander Parker Messick, and he mentioned after the game that he was eating an ice cream cone when Munetaka Murakami hit his game-deciding home run. Antonacci will replace Randal Grichuk in the lineup on Monday, and Chase Meidroth, who hit leadoff in Game 1, will move down to eighth in the order.
