Browns RB Glenn Winston underwent arthroscopic knee surgery.
This leaves the second-year UDFA with little chance of making the team. It’s possible Winston will eventually be waived/injured, and spend the season on I.R. Duke Johnson (hamstring) and Terrance West (calf) are also on the shelf at Browns camp, allowing Isaiah Crowell to dominate first-team reps.

Browns coach Mike Pettine said RB Glenn Winston (knee) has “shown a lot on the practice field.”
“I think it’s time to get a peek and see what’s there,” Pettine said. “He’s shown a lot on the practice field -- a lot -- but we have to see if he can carry over to the game.” Pettine’s comments suggest Winston will play more than just a cursory role after being activated off the PUP list Tuesday. His usage will be something to watch this weekend.

Browns activated RB Glenn Winston (arthroscopic knee surgery) from the reserve/PUP list.
This explains why Robert Turbin was waived on Tuesday. Winston will slot in a distant third on the depth chart behind Isaiah Crowell and Duke Johnson.

Coach Mike Pettine said “we’ll look at” getting No. 3 RB Glenn Winston more reps after Terrance West lost a critical fumble in the Week 13 loss to the Bills.
“West lately has been very careless with the football,” Pettine said. “Giving up the ball like that is inexcusable.” Winston was claimed off waivers from the 49ers at final cuts. The UDFA out of Michigan State rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries in the preseason. Winston stands 6-foot, 220. Isaiah Crowell is locked in atop the depth chart with an arrow pointing up.

Isaiah Crowell (hip) is expected to practice Thursday.
Despite sitting out Wednesday’s session, Crowell is on track to suit up for Sunday’s crucial home game against the Colts. He’s definitely a RB2 candidate, as Indy can be smashed in the mouth via power runs and Terrance West is in the doghouse for fumbling. OC Kyle Shanahan will want to take a run-heavy approach if possible in an effort to keep Andrew Luck off the field.

Browns claimed RB Glenn Winston off waivers from the 49ers.
An UDFA out of Michigan State, Winston had a strong preseason for the Niners, taking the rock 19 times for 113 yards and a score. He couldn’t crack San Fran’s deep running back corps, however. The Browns are similarly long on bodies, but lower on proven talent.

    49ers waived RB Glenn Winston.
An UDFA out of Michigan State, Winston ran for 113 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries (5.9 YPC) this preseason. The 49ers are hoping to sneak him through waivers and develop him on their practice squad.

Browns declared RB Glenn Winston, CB Joe Haden, CB K’Waun Williams, TE Gary Barnidge, OL Vinston Painter, OL Andrew McDonald, and WR Rodney Smith inactive for Week 16 against the Panthers.
Without Williams and Haden, the Browns are highly vulnerable at cornerback. Haden is one of the top cover men in the league and Williams has been an undrafted rookie gem at slot corner.
