This week the PGA TOUR returns to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C., for the Wachovia Championship, where GCSAA Class A Golf Course Superintendent Jeff Kent has the golf course in fine shape despite a cold spring that postponed the growing season about a month.
Kent had a large tree removed from the right side of No. 8 and redid a bunker there, allowing more people to go for the green. He also extended the back of 17th green and added more rough behind it. Kent points to No. 15 as the pivotal hole because it is a players last chance to birdie with the finishing three holes being so rigorous.
Drought has cost Quail Hollow 200 trees, mostly beyond the ropes and not affecting play. Kent has replaced 100 acres of grass with a drought-resistant fine fescue, mostly outside the ropes, therefore reducing water use and mowing resources.
