Australian Nick Flanagan has been named National Amateur of the Month for August by the Southern Golf Association. The newly-crowned U.S. Amateur champion gained the award is a surprisingly close vote over Canadian James Lepp, 19, who was accorded honorable mention..
Flanagan, also 19, won the U.S. Amateur with a 37-hole, final-round victory over Casey Wittenberg, who had won the SGA monthly award for July when he won the Southern Am and Porter Cup.
Lepp, who will compete on the University of Washington golf team after transferring from Illinois, impressed several of the blue-ribbon panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists by winning the Pacific Coast Amateur and the pro Canadian Tour’s Vancouver Classic in August. In a three-tournament stretch, Lepp was an aggregate 48-under par and lowered the Capilano course record to 62 during the PCA, which he won by 10 strokes.
