Greg Norman has withdrawn from the JELD-WEN Tradition. A statement released from his Jupiter, Fla., office said only, A late adjustment in Greg Norman’s schedule unfortunately means he will not be able to participate in the JELD-WEN Tradition.
Norman participated in the Telus Skins Game in Canada and in The International PGA TOUR tournament in the past month. A spokesman in his office confirmed that the withdrawal is not related to the myriad injuries which have plagued Norman, 51, since his active tournament schedule was reduced approximately five years ago.
Norman recently filed for divorce from his wife of 25 years, Laura, stating the marriage was irretrievably broken. The couple, who have two grown children, have said that the parting was amicable.
Norman tallied five points in the International Aug. 10-11. The event is scored on a Stableford points system. His point collection was all recorded on the first day, when he birdied both the 16th and 1 7th holes. On Friday he scored no points and missed the cut.
‘I’m happy with it,’ he said. ‘I wanted to get out and walk the golf course and enjoy myself. I can’t expect too much.
‘My timing obviously is a little off. I’m working on getting my rhythm going and fine-tuning a few things.’
He said, however, that he will not return to the game on a fulltime basis.
‘I don’t miss the competition, not really,’ Norman said. ‘It’s hard to pinpoint, maybe it’s because I’ve been away so long.
Norman was playing his first competitive round since November’s Merrill Lynch Shootout after undergoing two knee surgeries. He is the official host of the Shootout, played annually in Naples, Fla.
After back surgery in March 2005, Norman entered four full-field events last year - the British Open, the U.S. Open, Senior British Open and The International.
