PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Let’s get one thing straight: Sweden has won a major before. Annika Sorenstam has 10 of ‘em actually, with Helen Alfredsson and Liselotte Neumann each chipping in one apiece.
There has never, though, been a Swedish man who has captured a major title. That could change on Sunday.
Countrymen Henrik Stenson and Jonas Blixt will be paired in the penultimate twosome at the 95th PGA Championship, entering the final round at two and three strokes, respectively, behind leader Jim Furyk.
Each man knows what a major win would mean for his country.
“That would be huge,” Blixt said. “I mean, it’s a very small country. There’s a lot of golfers from there. You set up your goals high and that’s a very high goal for both me and Henrik. To win one would be very, very special.”
“It would be lovely,” Stenson agreed. “But we’re still a long ways from that. There’s no point thinking about tomorrow and thinking ahead of things. It’s all about going out and doing the same things. It’s going to be a big challenge again to keep the mind in the right place and if I can do that, I hope I can have a chance on the back nine.”
