Money, money, money. That’s what it’s all about this week, as players battle it out for the richest first-place prize in Nationwide Tour history, $117,000. The purse was increased by $150,000 from last year to $650,000, making it the highest prize purse among all full field Nationwide Tour events in the U.S. and Canada.
Last season, Andre Stolz came from two shots back to capture this event by two over Tommy Tolles for his first career title. Stolz shot back-to-back 68s over the weekend and in doing so set a new tournament record of 271 in the process.
The win helped enable Stolz to advance to the PGA Tour, as he finished 13th on the 2003 money list. Tolles and D.A. Points were tied for the lead after three rounds, as they set a new 54-hole mark of 201. Points, with his third-round 64, set the new course mark with his 8-under total. Points finished tied for third with Daniel Chopra.
The Glen Club, hosting this event for the second straight year, was constructed after the U.S. government closed the Glenview Naval Air Station in 1995. Former Presidents George Bush and Gerald Ford served at the air station during WorldWar II.
The Glen Club ranked as the 13th most difficult course on Tour last year, with a scoring average of 71.878. The hardest hole was the par-4 sixth, which played to an average of 4.357, ranking it 20th on the Nationwide Tour.
The 2002 event was held at Kemper Lakes Golf Course in Long Grove, Illinois. The Nationwide Tour moves to Pennsylvania next week for the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic at one of the prettiest venues on Tour, Glenmaura National Golf Club outside of Scranton. Current PGA Tour player Blaine McCallister titled there last year.
