This past weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C., the No. 1-ranked womens golf team in the nation continued to make the Lady Tar Heel Invitational their own personal domain. Duke won this event for the ninth consecutive time by a whopping 21 shots over the next closest team. The victory was also the 91st for head coach Dan Brooks during his 22 years in Durham.
While Brooks has truly created a juggernaut in the collegiate game, it has been the past eight years where his teams have racked up the hardware. During this time span, Brooks teams have won 65 events, including three national titles and seven ACC crowns. All-Americans left and right, the Blue Devils have set the standard for excellence on the links.
Win No. 91 puts Brooks at the top of the list for womens coaches with former San Jose State coach Mark Gale. Dont expect the tie to last very long, as I think Brooks might very well put up a number which no one will touch for some time, if ever.
When I asked Brooks this past Sunday about reaching the mark, he told me, I wasnt even aware of how close I was until I read our media guide just a couple of weeks ago.
In my opinion, this sums up the man to a T. Unassuming in many ways, not one to get caught up with records and stats, Dan Brooks simply tries to help his players get better.
Over the past two decades Brooks has not only helped his players get better, but now has the pick of virtually all the top junior golfers in the land. This combination is likely to continue for some time, and will add many more titles to the 91 his teams have already won.
