    Infielder Gosuke Katoh, who spent the last two seasons in Japan, announced his retirement.
    Katoh was a second-round pick of the Yankees in 2013, and he briefly surfaced in the majors with the Blue Jays in 2022, collecting a double and walking three times in 11 plate appearances. He signed with the Nippon Ham Fighters after that season, but after not experiencing much success in Japan, he’s chosen to call it a career at age 30.

    Gosuke Katoh has signed with the Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
    Katoh was released by the Mets earlier this offseason. The 28-year-old second baseman made his big-league debut this past season, getting into eight games for the Blue Jays before being released in early May and scooped up off waivers by New York. He didn’t end up appearing in a game for the Mets, hitting .219/.305/.377 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases across 329 plate appearances in 81 games for Triple-A Syracuse. He’ll head overseas for the 2023 campaign.

    Katoh made his major-league debut this past season, getting into eight games for the Blue Jays, before being cut loose in early May. He was quickly claimed off waivers by the Mets, but didn’t end up getting into a game for New York. The 28-year-old infielder hit .219/.305/.377 with nine home runs and seven stolen bases across 329 plate appearances in 81 games this season at the Triple-A level. He should be able to land a minor league contract with an invite to spring training this offseason.

    Gosuke Katoh will join the Mets in New York on Saturday just in case either Eduardo Escobar or Jeff McNeil wind up on the injured list.
    Katoh was pulled from his game at Triple-A Syracuse on Friday night after Escobar and McNeil were pulled from the their game in the second inning. He isn’t on the 40-man roster though, so promoting him from Triple-A would require an additional move on the Mets part.

    The Mets needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Tommy Hunter to join the big league bullpen on Friday and it looks like Katoh drew the short straw. The 27-year-old hit just .098/.260/.146 in 50 plate appearances at Triple-A Las Vegas.
