Seahawks extended a second-round tender to restricted free agent S Jeron Johnson.
The second-round tender is worth $2.187 million, and means Seattle would receive a second-round pick if it declined to match an offer sheet. Johnson was a special teamer in 2013, playing only 29 snaps on defense. The second-round tender ensures he’ll be back in Seattle.

Seahawks placed S Jeron Johnson on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, ending his season.
Johnson re-injured his hamstring Sunday against the 49ers. The special teams player recorded six tackles in seven games. He’ll be an RFA in March.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
    Chiefs released S Jeron Johnson.
The Chiefs added Johnson as safety depth last month during Eric Berry’s holdout. There’s no need for him anymore with Berry back in the fold. Johnson struggled over 195 snaps for the Redskins last year. We doubt his phone will be ringing off the hook.

Chiefs signed S Jeron Johnson, formerly of the Redskins, to a one-year contract.
The former Redskin gives the Chiefs safety depth with franchise player Eric Berry holding out. Johnson logged just 195 snaps on defense in Washington last year and was a liability when he was called upon. He’ll compete for a role on special teams in addition to his duties at safety.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
    Seahawks signed S Jeron Johnson.
He’ll provide depth at the back end of the defense with Earl Thomas on injured reserve. A 2011 UDFA, Johnson spent 2011-14 with the Seahawks, so he knows coach Pete Carroll’s system well.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
Jeron Johnson is expected to emerge as the Redskins’ starting strong safety.
Johnson has rotated with Duke Ihenacho during OTAs, but remains the likeliest option to start at strong safety. Johnson could be an IDP sleeper this year in Washington’s back end. He is a hard-hitting former special teamer.

    Seahawks re-signed S Jeron Johnson to a one-year contract.
The 25-year-old former Boise State star was reported to have been tendered at the second-round level. If he signed that tender, Johnson will be owed $1.431 million. Johnson is used sparingly on defense, but contributed three special teams tackles last season. The Seahawks apparently believe he has potential to contribute in the secondary, based on his relatively pricey tender cost.
  • FA Defensive Back #29
Seahawks S Jeron Johnson has agreed to restructure his contract.
Johnson was slapped with a second-round tender as a restricted free agent last month. He quickly signed the deal and would have been set up to earn a $2.187 million salary. Johnson’s new deal can earn him “up to” $2 million on a one-year pact. He doesn’t play much defense but is a special teams stalwart.
  • FA Defensive Back #23
Duke Ihenacho has won the Redskins’ starting strong safety job.
He beat out Jeron Johnson, who was signed as a free agent after spending the first four years of his career in Seattle. Ihenacho is a “box” safety who started 14 games for the 2013 Broncos. He missed most of last season with a broken heel.
  • FA Defensive Back #23
CSN Washington expects Duke Ihenacho to open the season as the starting strong safety.
Ihenacho has been getting the majority of first-team reps over Jeron Johnson. The Redskins have more invested in Johnson and aren’t expected to name a starter until late in training camp. Dashon Goldson is the starter at free safety.
