With Robert Griffin III battling a thumb injury, the Ravens badly needed depth behind Lamar Jackson and wildly-raw rookie Trace McSorley. A career camp arm type, Callahan will have little shot at cracking the 53-man roster, though perhaps he will begin the year there if RGIII is not ready.

It confirms previous reports. The Packers are resting Aaron Rodgers and Brett Hundley (ankle). Callahan gets the start over Marquise Williams.

The Packers tried to practice-squad Callahan after he made their Week 1 roster. He had a strong preseason, but doesn’t have much future as a backup. The Saints will carry Callahan as a No. 3 quarterback behind Drew Brees and Luke McCown.

The Saints claimed Callahan off waivers last week but didn’t see enough to keep him as a No. 3 quarterback. Callahan could end up back on Green Bay’s practice squad.

It gives Cleveland four quarterbacks on the 53 with Cody Kessler (concussion) and Josh McCown (shoulder) nursing injuries, and only Kevin Hogan currently healthy. The Browns’ waiver claim of Callahan suggests Hogan will indeed start Sunday against the Jets while Kessler and McCown remain in recovery mode.

It’s insurance in case Aaron Rodgers (calf) can’t make it through Sunday’s game. The Packers waived LB Carl Bradford in a corresponding move.

This was expected with Aaron Rodgers expected to miss at least the next several weeks and possibly the entire season. Callahan will backup Brett Hundley.

Callahan went unclaimed after getting waived from the Packers. With Carson Wentz sidelined, he’ll give the Eagles offseason depth behind Nick Foles and Nate Sudfeld.

Callahan spent most of the past two years on the Packers’ 53-man roster but could never progress past camp arm status. The Wesley College product turns 25 in June.

Beat writer Tom Silverstein states the Packers always intended to re-sign Callahan, so the transaction isn’t necessarily an indication that the team will hold Aaron Rodgers out of its final two regular season games. Green Bay will be formally eliminated from playoff contention if the Falcons beat the Bucs on Monday night.
