De Paula was recently removed from the Padres’ 40-man roster, and the Giants decided to take a chance on the 23-year-old. The southpaw had a 3.86 ERA and 57/11 K/BB ratio over 74 2/3 innings with Double-A San Antonio this past season.

The 23-year-old made 14 starts for Double-A San Antonio this season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. He’ll be exposed in December’s Rule 5 Draft after being removed from the 40-man roster.

He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will remain in the organization. De Paula has allowed one run over 3 1/3 relief innings for the big club this season and holds a 1.53 ERA over three Triple-A starts.
