White Sox released OF Luis Alexander Basabe.
Basabe signed a minor league contract with the White Sox last November after missing half of the 2021 campaign due to a left wrist injury. The 25-year-old outfielder, who appeared in nine contests for the Giants during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, was hitting .080/.115/.160 with zero homers in 26 plate appearances over nine games at Triple-A Charlotte this season.

Basabe suffered the injury while diving for a ball in right field during Tuesday’s Cactus League game. That injury ruins any slim chances that he had of cracking the Opening Day roster in a reserve role. The 24-year-old was 1-for-9 (.111) with a 3/1 K/BB ratio and a pair of stolen bases in Cactus League action.

Basabe suffered the injury during a Cactus League game on Tuesday afternoon against the Brewers when he dove for a ball in right field. The diagnosis certainly could have been worse, but he will be sidelined for a bit in Giants camp and can probably be ruled out of the mix for the Opening Day roster.

Basabe landed hard on his wrist while attempting a diving catch in right field and walked slowly off the field with a trainer. He looked to be in quite a bit of pain. The 24-year-old outfielder is in Giants camp this spring as a non-roster invitee after being designated for assignment in February and then outrighted to Triple-A.

Luis Alexander Basabe was removed from Tuesday’s game against the Rockies due to an apparent leg injury.

Luis Alexander Basabe singled for his first major league hit, walked twice and stole a base after replacing an injured Mike Yastrzemski in Thursday’s game.
With the Giants in the midst of the playoff race, Basabe hasn’t gotten any starts since being called up on Sept. 8. He had received just one at-bat previously. He made a really nice impression off the bench in his one, but it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll be penciled into the lineup at any point this month.
