Sources tell the Associated Press that a decision on the fate of OC Mike Sherman and GM Jeff Ireland could come Thursday.
Owner Stephen Ross reportedly got so upset during the season-ending loss to the Jets that he turned away because he could no longer watch. It’s understandable considering the Dolphins choked away a playoff berth by scoring a total of seven points against a pair of non-playoff teams in the final two weeks. Sherman is considered the most likely man to be fired and the AP says Ireland is in “serious jeopardy” as well. Head coach Joe Philbin is tentatively expected to return for his third season.
  • Dolphins fired offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.
Sherman’s 2013 offense finished 27th in yards and 26th in points despite dropping massive gobs of money on Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Dustin Keller, Tyson Clabo, and more. Miami also allowed a league-high 58 sacks of second-year franchise quarterback Ryan Tannehill, whom the club will now pray was not shell shocked by a hit-riddled season. For now, at least, it appears GM Jeff Ireland and coach Joe Philbin are safe, with Sherman being the Fall Guy. The Dolphins would do well to find a more imaginative playcaller willing to commit to the run game as a critical element on offense.
  • The CFL’s Montreal Alouettes hired ex-Packers coach Mike Sherman as head coach.
Sherman was head coach and/or GM in Green Bay from 2000-2005 before getting canned shortly after GM Ted Thompson took over. Sherman then became the Texans’ OC in 2007 before landing the Texas A&M head gig from 2008-2011. Sherman was the Dolphins’ OC from 2012-2013 and has been coaching at the high school level the last three years. He turned 63 on Tuesday.
