Alex Sogard has progressed nicely in the Arizona Fall League and has his sights set on cracking the Astros Opening Day bullpen in 2014.
The 26-year-old southpaw, and younger brother of A’s infielder Eric Sogard, has compiled a 1.59 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 9/5 K/BB ratio through 11 1/3 innings on the Fall season. The overall results, a 6.00 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 37/29 K/BB ratio, were highly disappointing this season. He struggled mightily through 23 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2013, before regaining his form and finishing the season strong in 25 innings at Double-A Corpus Christi. He’ll look to secure a role as a situational left-hander during spring training.

Diamondbacks acquired LHP Alex Sogard from the Astros for 3B Cesar Carrasco.
Sogard owns a promising 2.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 43 1/3 innings of relief this season at the Double-A level, but he has issued 20 walks alongside only 25 strikeouts. The 26-year-old left-hander was a 26th-round pick in 2010 out of North Carolina State University.
