Alexander Smit pitched one-hit ball over seven innings and fanned 11 for low Single-A Beloit on Thursday.
Smit, who has spent much of the year as a reliever, is 6-1 with a 3.20 ERA, 63 H and 109/37 K/BB in 84 1/3 IP. Although he’s been around for a few years now, the Dutchman is still just 20. He projects as a reliever in the majors, but he could be a pretty good one.

Reds claimed LHP Alexander Smit off waivers from the Twins.
Smit, who signed out of The Netherlands in 2002, seemed to break through last year, only to regress in 2007. The 21-year-old had a 5.86 ERA and a 38/26 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 IP while splitting time between the rotation and the pen for Single-A Fort Myers. It’s still possible that he’ll develop into a major league reliever someday, but he’s a long shot.

Reds sent LHP Alexander Smit outright to Single-A Sarasota.
Smit looked like a legitimate prospect a couple of years ago with the Twins, but the 22-year-old hasn’t developed. It’s no surprise that he cleared waivers.
