The 33-year-old backstop spent the majority of the 2023 campaign at Triple-A Norfolk where he slashed .288/.365/.417 with three homers and 17 RBI in 148 plate appearances. You can never have enough quality catching depth, so it’s a nice depth move for the Tigers. Barring injury, he’s unlikely to unseat Jake Rogers and Carson Kelly on the big league roster, but he could find a role mentoring Dillon Dingler at Triple-A Toledo.

Bemboom has accepted the assignment, so he’ll resume playing with Norfolk. He’ll probably get the call if the Orioles again lose a catcher to the IL.

As soon as James McCann came off the IL, Bemboom knew his days were numbered. He started three games while McCann was out and went 2-for-8.

Bemboom got into three games earlier this season for the Orioles before being designated for assignment. The 33-year-old backstop will take over as Baltimore’s backup catcher while James McCann is on the injured list.

Bemboom had been designated for assignment earlier in the day, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as depth for the O’s at Triple-A. The 33-year-old went 0-for-2 during his time with the Orioles.

The moves clears a spot for Ryan O’Hearn on the 40-man roster. The Orioles will now be carrying two catchers with Adley Rutschman and James McCann on the active roster.

Bemboom will open the regular season as Baltimore’s backup catcher with primary caddy James McCann on the injured list with a left oblique strain.

McCann felt tightness in his side last week and hasn’t played in a game since then. The 32-year-old spent time on the injured list last season with a left oblique strain and is “hopeful” he will be ready for Opening Day. Oblique injuries can be tricky and if he were to miss time Anthony Bemboom will serve as the Orioles’ backup catcher.

Bemboom signed a one-year contract with the Orioles last month, but will open the impending 2023 campaign in the minors after being removed from Baltimore’s 40-man roster. The 32-year-old journeyman backstop represents emergency catching depth behind franchise cornerstone Adley Rutschman.

Bemboom was added to the 40-man roster in Baltimore earlier this month and is now officially locked into the O’s plans for the 2023 season. He will compete for the backup job behind rising star Adley Rutschman. It’s a split contract that carries differing salaries whether Bemboom is part of the active MLB squad or ultimately gets sent to the minors.
