Garcia will be in camp next spring as emergency catching depth for Arizona behind Gabriel Moreno and Adrian Del Castillo. The well-traveled soon-to-be 33-year-old backstop got into a pair of contests for the Diamondbacks this past season.

The 32-year-old backstop was designated for assignment earlier in the week after the team signed James McCann. He’ll continue to function as emergency catching depth for the D’Backs at the Triple-A level.

Garcia got into a pair of games for Arizona earlier this month, going 0-for-4 at the dish, while Gabriel Moreno dealt with injuries. The well-traveled backstop has been cut loose with the Diamondbacks opting to roll with more experienced veteran James McCann as part of their catching tandem with Moreno on the shelf.

Garcia will be the backup backstop to Jose Herrera now that Gabriel Moreno is on the injured list with his hand bruise.

Garcia went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The 32-year-old was up for just one game as emergency catching depth after starter Gabriel Moreno suffered a minor hand injury that didn’t end up requiring a trip to the injured list.

Garcia’s stint with Arizona winds up lasting roughly 24 hours as he entered Saturday’s contest against the Reds as a defensive replacement. The 32-year-old journeyman figures to pass through waivers unclaimed and elect free agency, unless he decides to stick around at Triple-A Reno.

Hampson batted .300 (12-for-40) with eight RBI and three steals in 17 games this spring to secure a spot on Arizona’s season-opening roster over veteran Ildemaro Vargas in a versatile bench role.

Garcia, 31, has made in 119 major league games, though just three have come in the last two seasons, and hit .211/.248/.325 in 327 plate appearances. He’ll could compete with Jose Herrera and Adrian Del Castillo for a spot backing up Gabriel Moreno next spring, though he’ll be a big underdog.

Garcia briefly filled in while J.T. Realmuto was hurt. He has the option to refuse the assignment, but either way he’ll become a minor league free agent at the end of the season.
