He’ll take the roster spot of Joe Blanton, who was traded to the Dodgers on Friday. Rosenberg had a brief stint with the Phillies in June and holds an impressive 1.89 ERA and 73/18 K/BB ratio over 62 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A. Look for him in middle relief.

The Phillies are reportedly in the market for right-handed pitching depth, but view Rosenberg as a short-term option. He owns a career 2.91 ERA in parts of five seasons in the minors. Raul Valdes was optioned off the 25-man roster Friday in a corresponding move.

Rosenberg served as the Phillies’ 26th man for Sunday’s doubleheader against the Rays. The 26-year-old has allowed six earned runs in 2 1/3 innings this season.

Rosenberg has posted a 4.30 ERA and ugly 24/20 K/BB ratio over seven starts for Lehigh Valley, but the Phillies decided that they needed a fresh arm in the bullpen. He’ll work in long relief.

Rosenberg was given the boot to make room for Mike Adams’ return from the disabled list. Rosenberg allowed four runs in three relief appearances with the Phillies.

“It’s OK, no big deal,” Rosenberg told reporters on Monday. “I’m throwing a bullpen today and I’ll get back into a game in another couple of days.” The righty is not expected to crack the Phillies’ Opening Day roster.

Jonathan Papelbon, who blew his seventh save on Saturday, watched as Rosenberg pumped mid-90s heat past Freddie Freeman to end the game. The Phillies could be paying a guy like Rosenberg the MLB minimum to close out games during this lost season, but Papelbon and his MLB-reliever-high $13 million salary will be back out there whenever Philadelphia next has a save opportunity.
