Diggins

Diggins, who underwent Tommy John surgery in Aug. 2003, pitched a total of six innings last season before being shut down with elbow soreness. If he’s healthy, he could be a candidate to see time in the Milwaukee bullpen during the second half of 2005.

The Brewers and Diggins are hopeful that rest will repair the tear, but there’s a pretty good chance that he’ll need season-ending surgery.

Diggins, who made five starts for the Brewers last year, should spend most of this season in the minors. Martinez, who like Diggins is 23, was 8-8 with a 5.30 ERA in 29 games for Double-A Huntsville last season.

Diggins, who underwent Tommy John surgery in Aug. 2003, might be a candidate to join Milwaukee’s pen after the All-Star break. Sarfate, a superior prospect, is in line for a September callup.

Diggins, who is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, was reassigned to minor league camp three weeks ago. Now he’s off the 40-man roster.

While pitching in the Arizona Rookie League, Diggins developped a bone spur in his pitching elbow. He will be shut down for now.
