Blood-thinning drugs have failed to dissolve all of the small blood clot in Ben Grieve’s upper right arm, and the Devil Rays are talking about sending him to Dallas to see a specialist.

Ben Grieve may not be going on the DL because of an infected thumb after all.
Grieve, who spent two nights in the hospital because of an infection that started in the webbing of his left thumb, said his hand felt so much better he could have played in Monday’s game. A decision on his status will be made today after an exam and tests, possibly an MRI, by Tampa hand specialist Dr. John Rayhack. If Grieve goes on the DL, he will have a minor procedure on the area and will miss two weeks. If not, he should return in a few days.

Ben Grieve’s sore left hand is healing fast and he could be cleared to start swinging a bat by the end of the week.
Grieve went on the DL last month with a thumb infection. If he doesn’t feel much pain after he starts hitting, it won’t be long before he returns.

Manager Lou Piniella said Ben Grieve could be activated as soon as Tuesday.
Grieve, on the DL recovering from thumb surgery, had eight at-bats in an extended spring training game yesterday, and will do the same today. Hold off on activating him until he’s back and playing well.

The Brewers don’t plan to use a strict platoon in right field this year, manager Ned Yost said.
Ben Grieve is expected to start in right, and he may only be replaced against the tougher lefties. That will result in less playing time for Brady Clark.

If they don’t acquire Manny Ramirez, the Rangers likely will sign Ben Grieve to play right field.
Grieve isn’t much of a right fielder, but he deserves another chance to play regularly. If he struggles over the first couple of months, the Rangers can move Laynce Nix to right and play Ramon Nivar in center.

The Padres talked to the Rays about outfielder Ben Grieve, but not deal was reached.
The Padres are looking to move a multiyear contract for someone whose deal expires after 2003. The Rays would like to deal Grieve, but they’re not going to take on salary to make it happen.

Grieve will have a rib removed to eliminate an impingement that might have led to the blood clot in his right arm.

Ben Grieve will be out of the Brewers’ lineup today.
Brady Clark will start in his place, due to his success against opposing starting pitcher Kip Wells (5-for-8 lifetime).

Ben Grieve has been bothered by swelling near his calf, a problem caused by Baker’s cysts, which cause a fluid buildup in the knee.
Grieve missed last night’s game, even though he is 7-for-13 lifetime against Jaret Wright. Manager Ned Yost said Grieve could play if needed, and is available to pinch-hit.
