Neither will have any value in the bullpen in September.

Bowles pitched 1 1/3 innings in 17 days with the Jays.

Bowles had a 1.06 ERA and eight saves in 14 appearances as Syracuse’s closer. If his control was better, he would probably be a decent setup man by now. As is, he’s mediocre.

Bowles has long been a successful reliever in the minors and had a 3.30 ERA in 24 relief appearances in the majors over the last three years, but the Blue Jays never took a liking to him. He’ll be a pretty good pickup as a minor league free agent.

Bowles, 27, was one of the better minor league free agents available. He’ll have a real chance of winning a spot in the Milwaukee bullpen after posting a 3.30 ERA in 24 relief appearances for the Blue Jays over the last three years. Coste is an offensive-minded catcher with a pretty good track record, but he’s 30 years old and he’s coming off a season ruined by injuries. He’ll almost certainly end up at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Bowles will be a part of the Milwaukee bullpen at some point. The 27-year-old right-hander gave up three runs in seven innings this spring.

Pete Walker will be activated Saturday to replace Bowles on the roster.

Bowles was in the majors for 2 1/2 weeks back in May, but he pitched just 1 1/3 innings. He’ll be used as a mop-up man for now.

Bowles has been a closer in the minors, but the Blue Jays don’t think of him as much more than a middle reliever. No fantasy value.
