Reds optioned LHP Brian Shackelford to Triple-A Louisville.

Clearing a spot for one of Monday’s moves. Shackelford retired all four batters he faced in four appearances during his latest stint in the majors. Considering that left-handers have hit just .125 off him, the Reds might have been better off saving him a spot in the pen.

Rick White survives again. The move makes room for Esteban Yan in the bullpen. Shackelford was doing a fine job against lefties, but troubles against righties left him with a 7.71 ERA in 9 1/3 innings.

Shackelford has done a great job against lefties this year -- better than Scott Schoeneweis for sure -- but he’s been bad enough against righties to amass a 6.43 ERA in 22 appearances. He’ll be back in September.

Brian Shackelford was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault.

Shackelford was arrested leaving Miller Park following Wednesday’s game. Police spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz declined to provide details on the arrest other than to say it involved a woman Monday. The Reds said they would not discuss the case because of pending legal proceedings. “We recognize the seriousness of the matter and do not condone behavior of the type alleged,” the team said in a statement.

Shackelford won’t be joining the Bats right away apparently, as he’s still in jail following his arrest on suspicion of third-degree sexual assault. The 29-year-old gave up two runs in 2 1/3 innings during his latest stint with the Reds.

Shackelford had a 7.71 ERA in 9 1/3 innings for the Reds before being sent down a month ago. Since it was right-handed hitters that did him in before, the Reds might try to use him as more of a specialist this time.

Chris Booker would have been a better choice, but Shackelford was on the 40-man roster. Shackelford, a converted outfielder, had a 5.23 ERA in 32 2/3 IP out of the pen for Louisville. He’ll be used in middle relief.
