Guevara

Already a good excuse for having him open the year on the disabled list. The Reds will hardly be able to complain after handling Jared Burton the way they did last year.

It’s about time someone gambled on Guevara, as the Reds had absolutely no interest in using the screwball specialist. There’s good reason to doubt his ability to pitch in the majors, but the Reds wouldn’t even give him a chance to pitch in Triple-A. He had a 2.32 ERA and an 87/23 K/BB ratio in 62 innings at Double-A Chattanooga last season.

Florida didn’t want the screwball specialist for itself. It comes as little surprise that the Padres were interested in Guevara. The 25-year-old could be the next unheralded pitcher to break through as a part of San Diego’s bullpen.

Guevara left Wednesday’s game with a leg injury.

Guevara, a Rule-5 pick, is sporting a 6.48 ERA since coming off the DL on May 31. The Padres might use this as an excuse to put him back on the disabled list.

Guevara was a Rule-5 pick from Cincinnati, and the Reds agreed to surrender his rights for either cash or a player to be named later. He was 1-0 with a 5.84 ERA in 10 appearances for the Padres after starting the season on the disabled list.

It’s supposed to be a legitimate injury, and the Reds have no right to complain after the way they handled fellow Rule-5 pick Jared Burton during the first half of last season. They were hardly enamored with Guevara anyway. Guevara will probably spend a full month rehabbing in the minors once he’s healthy.

The Rule 5 pick from the Reds will likely start the season on the disabled list. With Justin Hampson also likely to begin the season on the DL with tendinitis in his left shoulder, Enrique Gonzalez will probably wind up on the major league roster.

Guevara, a Rule-5 pick from the Reds, had been out since spring training with a groin strain. He’ll be tried as a middle reliever.
