Indians purchased the contract of OF Carlos Moncrief from Double-A Akron.

The move protects him from being selected in the annual Rule 5 Draft. Moncrief, a 25-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder, is coming off a strong season in which he batted .284/.354/.470 with 17 home runs and 15 stolen bases in Double-A.

Moncrief had walked in his only previous plate appearance for the Giants. The team has plenty of room for him in the outfield right now if it wants to give him a look, but Moncrief is 28 and doesn’t project as a solid regular going forward.

He will fill Eduardo Nunez’s spot on the major league roster. Moncrief, a 28-year-old career minor leaguer, was batting .287/.349/.421 with two home runs and four stolen bases in 71 games this season at Triple-A.

Carlos Moncrief had a perfect day, finishing 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored as the Indians topped the Reds 4-2 on Wednesday.

Moncrief went hitless in two at-bats in Tuesday’s Cactus League opener. The 26-year-old posted decent numbers at Triple-A Columbus last season and is headed there to open the season again. If the Indians trade away an outfielder or two, or suffer injuries, Moncrief could get a shot in the show during the season.
