Brewers acquired LHP Chad Penny and OF Noochie Varner from the Tigers for OF Alex Sanchez.
Nice job by the Brewers of making something out of nothing. Petty, a 2000 second-round pick, was one of Detroit’s better pitching prospects. The 21-year-old was 3-4 with a 4.40 ERA at Single-A Lakeland and is at least a couple of years away from becoming an option as a fourth or fifth starter. Varner was one of the prospects the Tigers picked up from the Reds for Brian Moehler last year. He’s not very likely to make it as a reserve in the majors.
