Edwin Almonte will be called up later today.
Almonte fills the roster spot of Armando Benitez. He has four saves in five appearances for Triple-A Norfolk since coming over in the Roberto Alomar trade, and the Mets plan to eventually give him a look in the ninth inning.

Mets recalled RHP Edwin Almonte from Triple-A Norfolk.
Almonte isn’t a future closer, but in order to justify the Roberto Alomar trade, the Mets may decide to give him some save opps. If he does well over his first few appearances, he could be worth grabbing in NL-only leagues.

Mets recalled RHP Edwin Almonte from Triple-A Norfolk.
Orber Moreno deserved a promotion for more than Almonte did, but he’s not on the 40-man roster, and it’s likely that the Mets only wanted someone for a day or two.

Red Sox claimed RHP Edwin Almonte off waivers from the Mets.
Not one of Theo Epstein’s better waiver claims. Almonte’s been a very good minor league reliever for several years, but that changed last season (5.40 ERA between Triple-A Charlotte and Norfolk), and even when he was pitching well, he was never viewed as that great if a prospect. It’s unlikely that he’ll help the Red Sox.

Almonte, picked up off waivers from the Mets last month, likely will be re-signed to a minor league deal.

Red Sox re-signed RHP Edwin Almonte to a minor league contract.
The Red Sox, like a few other teams, used the non-tender deadline as a way to get borderline players off the 40-man roster without having to send them through waivers. It’s a smart strategy and it’s probably something we’ll see more of in the future, which is annoying only because it creates more work for us.

Almonte, claimed off waivers from the Mets last month, has given up nine hits and walked three. He’ll get a chance to compete for a spot in the Boston bullpen next spring.
