Giants optioned C Eli Whiteside to Triple-A Fresno.
In a bit of a surprise move, Hector Sanchez has made the team as Buster Posey’s backup while Pablo Sandoval will serve as the third catcher. The Giants also reassigned right-hander Jean Machi, outfielder Justin Christian and infielder Joaquin Arias to minor league camp.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy praised Hector Sanchez on Tuesday, as the 22-year-old seeks a spot on the Opening Day roster.
“Sure, he’s done enough to make this club,” Bochy said. “We need to decide what’s best for Hector and the club.” Sanchez has cooled off at the plate recently, batting only 2-for-12 (.167) since his blistering .452 start. But he has hit much better than veteran catchers Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart, and also projects as a better hitter going forward. Although Bochy has highlighted the need to boost the Giants’ offense, don’t be surprised if he gives the youngster a little more seasoning at Triple-A to start the season.
  • John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Giants are nearing a deal with Eli Whiteside.
Whiteside was non-tendered earlier this week so that the Giants could avoid paying him a hefty raise via arbitration. They’re close to signing him back at a cheaper rate.
  • Giants re-signed C Eli Whiteside to a one-year contract.
The Giants non-tendered Whiteside earlier this week but wound up bringing him back at a lesser salary than he would have made through arbitration. The 32-year-old batted just .197/.264/.310 over 236 plate appearances this past season, but the Giants value his defense. He got a major league deal, so Whiteside will almost surely back up Buster Posey in 2012.
  • Giants non-tendered C Eli Whiteside.
Not a surprise. Whiteside, 32, batted just .197/.264/.310 over 236 plate appearances this past season. The Giants haven’t ruled out bringing him back at a cheaper salary than he would have made through arbitration, but Chris Stewart appears to be the favorite for the backup catcher job right now.
  • Eli Whiteside recently underwent surgery on his right elbow.
The elbow bothered him for most of the 2011 season and affected his throwing. He’s doing well now but is expected to be non-tendered by the Giants. The 32-year-old should be able to find work somewhere as a backup.
  • Updating a previous item, Eli Whiteside did not undergo surgery on his right elbow.
Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reported Wednesday that Whiteside had elbow surgery, but he actually had an injection of enriched blood to speed healing. Either way, he’s expected to be non-tendered before the December 12 deadline. The 32-year-old backstop batted .197/.264/.310 over 236 plate appearances this season.

Hector Sanchez (knee) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Fresno.
Sanchez estimates that he’ll need about five or six rehab games before coming off the disabled list. Eli Whiteside will serve as Buster Posey’s backup for now.
  • Giants recalled C Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Fresno.
He’ll take the place of the injured Hector Sanchez (knee) on the active roster. Whiteside is a .218/.274/.339 hitter over 528 plate appearances in the majors and can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Hector Sanchez (knee) expects to resume baseball activities within a week.
Sanchez was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a left knee sprain. However, he believes he’ll be ready to return as soon as he’s eligible in early August. Eli Whiteside will serve as Buster Posey’s backup catcher for now.
