He’s also swiped 60 bases in 75 attempts. Velez turned 24 back in May, so he is quite old for the league. The Giants will need to bump him up to Double-A next year in order to see what they have in him. He’s probably a future utilityman at best.

Velez, 29, went 0-for-37 with the Dodgers this past season and batted .339/.371/.463 with two homers, 31 RBIs and 33 runs in 55 games with Triple-A Albuquerque. The switch-hitting utility man offers some speed and organizational depth.

Velez did not appear in a game at the major league level in 2012, but posted a solid .280/.358/.449 line with 11 homers, 58 RBI and 37 steals at Triple-A Memphis. The switch-hitting utility man could generate some interest on the free agent market.

Velez managed no hits in 40 plate appearances with the Dodgers this season. He’s never had much big league success and will likely open the 2012 season in Triple-A.

The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training. Velez, 30, batted .280/.358/.449 with 11 home runs, 58 RBI and 37 stolen bases with the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate this past season. He’ll need to have a big spring to win a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Unfortunately for Velez, the Giants have lost all faith in the 27-year-old as an infield option. But that’s only because he proved to be a horrible infielder. Since he’s a switch-hitter with great speed, Velez still figures to have a career as a reserve. The Giants, though, never needed both he and Andres Torres on the roster.

This means Mark DeRosa will officially go on the disabled list. Valez was batting .186/.271/.372 over his first 43 at-bats before being optioned to Triple-A Fresno on May 7.

He’ll take Mark DeRosa’s spot on the 25-man roster. Velez, who was just shipped out to Fresno ten days ago, returns to a .186/.271/.372 batting line over 43 at-bats.

Velez was brought up from Triple-A Fresno just two days ago when Mark DeRosa was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Now he’s back in the minors due to Freddy Sanchez’s triumphant return from knee surgery.

Velez, 31, is a .241/.287/.367 career hitter in 718 major league plate appearances. He seems doubtful to crack the Brewers’ Opening Day roster in 2014.
