Wolf passed through waivers unclaimed earlier this month and was shipped back to the minors after being removed from San Diego’s 40-man roster. The 25-year-old hasn’t pitched in the big leagues this season after being re-acquired back in April from the Pirates in a small trade.

Wolf picked up a win in his major league debut on Saturday but heads back to Double-A as the Padres recalled Pedro Avila to fortify their bullpen. He will continue to work as a starter in the minors.

Wolf’s outing was interrupted by an 84-minute rain delay in the third inning, but the Padres kept him in and let him qualify for the win. The 24-year-old got just two missed swings and one strikeout in his 75-pitch outing tonight. His slider looks like an effective pitch, but the majors are likely to be a challenge for him with his 89-mph fastball.

Wolf will make his major league debut against the Tigers today, and he could remain in the rotation until Michael Wacha comes off the injured list next month.
